Jan Palach
Jan Palach was a 20-year-old Charles University student who set himself on fire in Prague's Wenceslas Square on 16 January 1969, dying three days later. His self-immolation was a protest against the 1968 Soviet-led invasion that crushed the Prague Spring. He demanded the abolition of censorship and became a symbol of resistance to Soviet domination. Hundreds of thousands attended his funeral.
