Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck perfected oil-based paint in Flanders c. 1430, replacing egg-tempera with a medium allowing slow drying, blending, and luminous glazing. His technique spread across Europe, making possible the subtle realism and chromatic richness of Renaissance and Baroque painting.
