Jefferson Davis
President of the Confederate States of America (1861–1865), former US Secretary of War (1853–1857) and US Senator from Mississippi. He struggled to balance centralised wartime authority against states'-rights ideology, and after Confederate defeat was imprisoned for two years but never tried for treason.
