Jerome

Jerome was commissioned by Pope Damasus I to revise the existing Latin translations of scripture. Working in Bethlehem with Hebrew and Greek sources, he produced the Vulgate over decades. His extensive letters and commentaries make him one of the most prolific writers of Christian antiquity. He was a fierce polemicist and monastic advocate.
