Johannes Vermeer

Master of domestic tranquillity in the Dutch Golden Age. Vermeer produced only about 34 known paintings, all small in scale and monumental in effect. His ability to capture natural light falling on ordinary domestic scenes — a woman reading a letter, a girl with a pearl earring — created images of universal intimacy. He died in debt, largely forgotten until the 19th century rediscovery.
