John Hyrcanus II
John Hyrcanus II was a Hasmonean ruler who served as High Priest of Judaea and later as ethnarch under Roman suzerainty, repeatedly engaging in civil conflict with his brother Aristobulus II. He was politically dominated by his Idumean advisor Antipater (father of Herod the Great), who cultivated Roman support and gradually reduced Hyrcanus to a figurehead. After being supplanted by Herod and taken captive to Parthia, he was eventually returned to Judaea and executed by Herod in 30 BCE.
