John III Sobieski

John III Sobieski (1629–1696) was King of Poland from 1674 and one of the most celebrated military commanders of the seventeenth century. He rose to prominence defending Poland against Cossack, Tatar, and Ottoman incursions, most notably defeating the Ottomans at the Battle of Khotin (1673), which led to his election as King. His greatest achievement was commanding the combined Holy League relief force at the Battle of Vienna on 12 September 1683, where a charge of Polish Winged Hussars — the largest cavalry charge in history — broke the Ottoman siege and saved the Habsburg capital. He styled the victory with the Caesarian formula: 'We came, we saw, God conquered.' Despite his military brilliance, his reign was troubled by domestic politics and the limitations of the elective Polish monarchy. He is a founding hero of Polish national identity.
