John Law
Scottish financier who became Controller-General of Finances in France and in 1717 created the Compagnie d'Occident (Mississippi Company), merging it with the Banque Générale to form a paper-money system. The resulting speculative bubble collapsed in 1720 in simultaneous crashes in Paris and London, ruining thousands of investors.
