John Paul Jones
John Paul Jones became the new republic's first naval hero, raiding the British coast and defeating HMS Serapis off Flamborough Head in 1779 while commanding the Bonhomme Richard, a battle in which, his ship sinking under him, he is said to have declared: I have not yet begun to fight. He is often regarded as the founder of the United States Navy's fighting tradition.
