José I of Portugal
José I is remembered largely through the towering figure of his chief minister, the Marquis of Pombal, who effectively governed Portugal and implemented sweeping Enlightenment reforms: rebuilding Lisbon after the catastrophic 1755 earthquake, expelling the Jesuits, and restructuring education and commerce.
