Joseph McCarthy

US Republican Senator from Wisconsin (1947–1957) whose February 1950 claim to possess a list of Communists in the State Department launched four years of investigations that destroyed hundreds of careers; his tactics were exposed in the 1954 Army–McCarthy televised hearings and he was censured by the Senate in December 1954.
