Juan Carlos I of Spain

Juan Carlos I was designated successor by Franco and became King of Spain in 1975. Defying expectations of continuity with the dictatorship, he played a pivotal role in Spain's transition to democracy, helped defeat the 1981 coup attempt by Colonel Tejero, and guided Spain into NATO and the European Community. He abdicated in 2014 in favour of his son Felipe VI.
