Juba I of Numidia

Juba I was King of Numidia who allied with Pompey and the Optimate senators during the Roman Civil War against Julius Caesar, providing crucial military support in the African theater of the war. He destroyed a Caesarian force under Curio at the Battle of the Bagradas River in 49 BCE. After Caesar's decisive victory at the Battle of Thapsus in 46 BCE, Juba found his kingdom lost and his allies dead or fled; he engaged in a mutual suicide pact with the Roman general Marcus Petreius rather than face Caesar's triumph.
