Julius Nyerere

Julius Nyerere (1922-1999) was the founding father of Tanzania and a leading voice of African socialism and pan-Africanism. He developed the Ujamaa philosophy of African communalism, implemented in large-scale compulsory villagisation in the 1970s with mixed results. He led Tanzania's military intervention that overthrew Idi Amin in 1979. Respected for his personal incorruptibility and voluntary relinquishment of power in 1985, he remains one of Africa's most admired post-independence leaders.
