K'inich Janaab Pakal

K'inich Janaab Pakal (603–683 CE), known as Pakal the Great, was the ruler of the Maya city-state of Palenque in Chiapas from 615 to 683 CE — a reign of 68 years, one of the longest in history. He came to power at age twelve and transformed Palenque into one of the most powerful and artistically splendid cities of the Classic Maya period. His elaborate sarcophagus lid in the Temple of the Inscriptions, depicting his journey into the underworld, is among the most famous works of Maya art.
