Kara Mustafa Pasha

Kara Mustafa Pasha (c.1634–1683) was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from 1676 and commander of the Ottoman army at the Siege of Vienna (1683). He led a force of approximately 150,000 men to besiege Vienna but was defeated by the Holy League relief army under John III Sobieski on 12 September 1683. He was strangled by order of Sultan Mehmed IV on Christmas Day 1683 in Belgrade, the traditional punishment for a commander who suffered a major defeat. His failure ended the last serious Ottoman attempt to expand into Central Europe.
