Katalin Karikó pioneered the modification of mRNA to avoid immune rejection, a breakthrough that enabled the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. She shared the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Drew Weissman for their foundational mRNA research.
