King George III
British monarch whose insistence on taxing the colonies and suppressing rebellion transformed a political grievance into revolution. George III's refusal to negotiate with the Continental Congress and his use of Hessian mercenaries alienated moderate colonists. His mental illness in later years left Britain without decisive leadership during the Napoleonic Wars.
