Lamachus

Lamachus was an Athenian general renowned for his fighting spirit and modest means — sources note he was too poor to maintain the lifestyle expected of a strategos. He was one of three commanders appointed to lead the Sicilian Expedition of 415 BCE alongside Alcibiades and Nicias. Lamachus consistently argued for aggressive action, urging an immediate assault on Syracuse before defenses could be strengthened. He was killed in battle outside Syracuse in 414 BCE, depriving Athens of its most aggressive commander at a critical moment.
