Laurent-Desire Kabila
Long-time rebel who led the AFDL coalition, backed by Rwanda and Uganda, to overthrow Mobutu in 1997 and rename Zaire the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His break with his former backers triggered the Second Congo War; he was assassinated in 2001 and succeeded by his son Joseph.
