Leo II

Leo II was the grandson of Leo I and the briefest reigning eastern emperor of the fifth century, sharing the throne with his grandfather for only a few months in 474 before Leo I died, then reigning alone for a few months more before his own death that same year at the age of approximately seven. He was the son of the Isaurian general Zeno and Leo I's daughter Ariadne. His grandfather, recognizing that the child was too young to rule alone, had the boy's father Zeno crowned as co-emperor shortly before Leo I's death. Leo II died later in 474, reportedly of illness, leaving Zeno as the uncontested eastern ruler. Despite the brevity and passivity of his reign, Leo II holds a place of symbolic importance in Byzantine history as the last of the Leonid dynasty.
