Livia Drusilla
Augustus's wife for fifty-one years and the most consequential woman in Roman politics, though holding no office that admitted it. The sources hostile to her — Tacitus above all — credit her with engineering the succession of her son Tiberius by removing rivals; the charge is unprovable and revealing either way, since it shows what Romans thought influence at that distance from formal power could accomplish.
