Louis-Philippe I
Louis-Philippe, the 'Citizen King,' came to power after the July Revolution of 1830 and styled himself a constitutional monarch close to the bourgeoisie, carrying an umbrella rather than a scepter. His July Monarchy oversaw rapid industrialisation and French conquest of Algeria but increasingly represented the wealthy at the expense of the working class. The Revolution of 1848 sent him fleeing to England disguised as 'Mr. Smith.'
