Louis XIII of France
Louis XIII ruled France with Cardinal Richelieu as his chief minister, who centralised royal power and founded the Compagnie des Cent-Associés (1627) to promote French colonisation of Canada. His reign saw the establishment of French settlements in Martinique and Guadeloupe (1635).
