Louis XV of France

Louis XV inherited a powerful but debt-ridden monarchy and presided over the disastrous Seven Years' War, losing Canada, Louisiana, and French India to Britain. Beloved early as 'the Well-Beloved,' he grew deeply unpopular as costly wars and lavish court spending became symbols of royal irresponsibility. He reportedly acknowledged that after him would come the deluge.
