Louis XVI
Louis XVI was King of France from 1774 until his deposition in 1792, inheriting a monarchy burdened by debt and social unrest he lacked the decisiveness to reform. He reluctantly convened the Estates-General in 1789, triggering the chain of events that destroyed the Old Regime. Convicted of treason for secret communications with foreign powers, he was guillotined on 21 January 1793.
