Lucius Aelius Sejanus
Praetorian prefect who concentrated the guard into a single barracks outside Rome and made the post political. With Tiberius withdrawn to Capri he governed in practice for years, until a letter read to the Senate in 31 destroyed him in an afternoon. He is the standing Roman example of the servant of a withdrawn ruler becoming the government, and of how quickly that arrangement ends.
