Lucius Aemilius Paullus

Paullus ('Macedonicus') defeated Perseus of Macedon with innovative use of the Roman legionary system against the Macedonian phalanx. He distributed the Macedonian treasury to Rome — so large it eliminated direct taxation of Roman citizens for decades. His disciplined conduct of the war and mercy toward Perseus were praised as models of Roman virtue.
