Lucius Cornelius Cinna

Lucius Cornelius Cinna was one of the dominant figures of the turbulent late Roman Republic. After Sulla marched on Rome in 88 BCE and departed for the east, Cinna joined with the elderly Gaius Marius to retake the city in 87 BCE. He held the consulship for four successive years (87–84 BCE), a virtually unprecedented accumulation of power, and implemented popularis policies including the full enfranchisement of Italian allies. He was killed in a mutiny of his own troops while preparing to cross to Greece to confront Sulla.
