Lucius Licinius Lucullus

Roman commander who drove Mithridates VI from Pontus and invaded Armenia, winning victories far beyond Rome's usual eastern reach. His Fabian strategy slowly ground down the enemy but his men mutinied before the final blow. Recalled and replaced by Pompey; retired to legendary luxury in Rome, where his dinner parties defined Roman opulence. The word 'Lucullan' still describes extraordinary feasts.
