Lucius Licinius Murena

Lucius Licinius Murena was left in command of Roman forces in Asia after Sulla's departure following the First Mithridatic War. Without authorization, he launched two campaigns into Pontus around 82–80 BCE, allegedly in response to Mithridatic violations of the Treaty of Dardanus. Although he won some engagements, Sulla ultimately ordered him to cease hostilities and return to Rome, where he was awarded a triumph despite the controversial nature of his operations.
