Lucius Sergius Catilina

Failed patrician who twice lost the consulship and plotted to murder the consuls and seize Rome with an army of indebted veterans. Exposed by Cicero's four Catilinarian Orations. His army was destroyed at Pistoria in 62 BCE; he died fighting in the front rank.
