Lucretia
Roman noblewoman of patrician birth, wife of Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus. Her rape by Sextus Tarquinius and subsequent suicide became the founding narrative of Roman Republican liberty. She extracted oaths of vengeance from her father and husband, declared that no unchaste woman should ever claim her precedent, and killed herself. Her death triggered the expulsion of the Tarquin kings.
