Ludwig van Beethoven

German composer who bridged the Classical and Romantic eras. His Symphony No. 3 "Eroica" (1804) was originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte as a republican hero — Beethoven famously erased the dedication when Napoleon declared himself Emperor.
