Lycurgus

Semi-legendary Spartan lawgiver credited with the creation of the Spartan constitution (the 'Lycurgan rhetra'), the agoge educational system, the syssitia communal messes, and the Gerousia council of elders. Whether a historical person or a mythologised eponym for Sparta's constitutional development is debated; Plutarch wrote his biography in the Parallel Lives but admitted he could not fix even Lycurgus's century with confidence.
