Maarten Tromp

Destroyed a Spanish armada at the Downs in 1639, in English waters, which announced that Dutch sea power had replaced Spanish. He was killed in action against the English in the first of the trade wars that followed — the Dutch fought Spain for independence and England for commerce, and the second was the harder war.
