Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma (Great Soul), was the principal leader of India's independence movement. He developed satyagraha (non-violent resistance) in South Africa, then led India's National Congress. Major campaigns included the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the Salt March (1930), and Quit India (1942). He was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, five months after India's independence.
