Maria Christina of Austria
Maria Christina of Austria served as regent of Spain from 1885 following the death of her husband Alfonso XII until their posthumous son Alfonso XIII came of age in 1902. Her regency saw the disastrous Spanish-American War of 1898 and the loss of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
