Maria Theresa of Austria
Maria Theresa was Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions, reigning from 1740 to 1780. She launched two major wars to recover Silesia from Frederick the Great, and though ultimately unsuccessful in the Seven Years' War, she oversaw sweeping reforms that modernised the Habsburg state. A deeply religious mother of sixteen children, she was regarded as one of the most capable monarchs of the age.
