Marie Antoinette
Marie Antoinette was an Austrian archduchess who became Queen of France in 1774 upon her marriage to Louis XVI, and whose perceived extravagance and foreign birth made her a lightning rod for public hatred of the monarchy. Known derisively as 'Madame Deficit', she became a symbol of royal excess during the fiscal crisis, and her secret correspondence with her Habsburg relatives further undermined the royal family's position. Imprisoned after the storming of the Tuileries, she was tried for treason and guillotined on 16 October 1793.
