Marshal Philippe Petain
Philippe Petain became a national hero as the 'Hero of Verdun,' commanding French forces in the grueling 1916 defense that came to symbolize French endurance, and later restored army morale after the 1917 mutinies with his famous promise 'On les aura' ('We will get them'). His legacy was permanently overshadowed by his later role as head of the collaborationist Vichy regime during the Nazi occupation of France (1940-1944), for which he was convicted of treason after the war and sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment.
