Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was the pre-eminent leader of the American civil rights movement. A Baptist minister and PhD theologian, he championed non-violent civil disobedience. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-56), organized the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered the "I Have a Dream" speech, and campaigned for the Civil Rights Act (1964) and Voting Rights Act (1965). Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, he was assassinated in Memphis on 4 April 1968.
