Matthew Ridgway
Matthew Ridgway (1895-1993) stabilised the UN front in Korea after the catastrophic Chinese intervention in late 1950. Taking command of the Eighth Army in December 1950, he restored morale and turned the retreat into a successful counteroffensive that pushed back to roughly the 38th parallel. He succeeded MacArthur as UN commander in April 1951 and later became Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Army Chief of Staff.
