Maximian
Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus was a soldier emperor of low Pannonian birth who rose through the ranks to become Diocletian's most trusted colleague. Appointed Caesar in 285 CE and Augustus in 286 CE, he was given command of the western empire while Diocletian managed the east — the beginning of the Tetrarchy. He suppressed the Bagaudae peasant revolt in Gaul, campaigned in Africa against the Mauretanians, and defeated Carausius's breakaway British empire. He abdicated alongside Diocletian in 305 CE but returned to power multiple times during the subsequent conflicts among Diocletian's successors, ultimately dying in 310 CE.
