Maximilien Robespierre
Maximilien Robespierre rose from an obscure provincial lawyer to become the dominant figure of the Committee of Public Safety, earning the sobriquet 'The Incorruptible' for his austere personal integrity and uncompromising revolutionary virtue. He was the principal architect of the Reign of Terror, believing that revolutionary violence was a necessary instrument of republican justice. His own arrest and execution on 9 Thermidor 1794 ended the radical phase of the Revolution.
