Michelangelo Buonarroti

Regarded as the greatest sculptor in Western history. His David (1504) redefined human beauty; the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1512) redefined what painting could express. As chief architect of St. Peter's Basilica he shaped Rome itself. He worked continuously into his late eighties, dying the same year Galileo was born and Shakespeare was born.
