Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla
Miguel Hidalgo was a creole parish priest whose Grito de Dolores on 16 September 1810 launched the Mexican War of Independence with a mass uprising of indigenous and mestizo peasants. His poorly equipped army of 80,000 could not withstand royalist forces; Hidalgo was captured and executed in 1811. He is venerated as the Father of Mexican Independence.
