Mobutu Sese Seko

Congolese military officer (1930–1997) who seized power in CIA-backed coups in 1960 and 1965; renamed the country Zaire in 1971 as part of his 'Authenticité' campaign, ruled for 32 years accumulating a personal fortune estimated at billions of dollars, and was ousted by Laurent-Désiré Kabila's forces in 1997 amid national collapse.
