Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk)
Mustafa Kemal commanded the Ottoman 19th Division at Gallipoli in 1915, where his stubborn defensive stand ("I am not ordering you to attack. I am ordering you to die.") became the stuff of legend. He later led the Turkish War of Independence and founded the Republic of Turkey in 1923, transforming it into a secular nation-state as Atatürk ("Father of the Turks").
