Nabonidus
Nabonidus was the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, reigning from 556 to 539 BCE. He was unusual among Babylonian kings in his neglect of the traditional Marduk cult in favor of Sin, the moon god, which alienated the powerful Babylonian priesthood. He spent much of his reign at the oasis of Tayma in Arabia, leaving his son Belshazzar as regent in Babylon. When Cyrus the Great of Persia invaded in 539 BCE, the Babylonian priesthood and population offered little resistance; Babylon fell with minimal fighting and Nabonidus was captured. He was treated relatively mercifully by Cyrus and reportedly died in exile.
